A combination of solar generation, battery storage, monitoring equipment and a small computer that brings everything together. Here's a look at the hardware I'm using.
The solar installation uses four panels from two manufacturers. Together they have a combined rated capacity of 1,830 watts peak.
Two JA Solar panels, providing 930Wp of the installation's rated capacity.
Two DMEGC panels, providing a further 900Wp of rated capacity.
This is the combined panel nameplate rating, not a guarantee of actual generation. Real-world output varies with sunlight, orientation, temperature and other conditions.
Battery storage is a central part of the project. It's where solar generation, household demand and electricity pricing start to come together.
The EcoFlow Stream Ultra X is the main battery storage device used in the project. AgilePi collects information about its operation, including battery state of charge, power flows and solar input.
The controller also communicates with the EcoFlow system to manage operating modes and charging schedules.
The Smart Meter provides additional information about household and grid power flows. This helps put the battery readings into context and gives the controller a better picture of what's happening around the home.
The Pi runs the Python applications that collect information, store historical readings, communicate with the EcoFlow equipment and make automated energy-management decisions.
The equipment provides the information and the ability to control the energy system. The software is what brings it all together. That's where the monitoring, historical records, forecasting and automated charging decisions happen.
